The shorter day trip from Riyadh is the Red Sand Dunes near Al Thumamah, 45 minutes to an hour north-east of the centre. Out after lunch, on the sand for golden hour, back in the city for dinner.
Quad biking is booked ahead where you want it; horse and camel rides are arranged. An SUV takes you onto the dunes, a sedan reaches the roadside, and paired with the Edge of the World it makes one long desert day.
The Red Sand DunesAquarabia at Qiddiya, for a family day
Aquarabia at Qiddiya City is a full day trip from Riyadh rather than a stop on one: Saudi Arabia's premier water theme park, about 45 kilometres west and roughly forty minutes out, up to an hour at peak.
Inside are slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, children's zones and VIP cabanas. The car matters most on the way home, with a tired family and wet bags, so the chauffeur waits on site all day. The Riyadh to Qiddiya run carries the road and the return.

Elephant Rock, Jabal AlFil, stands about 52 metres high, twenty minutes north-east of the Old Town. It is the one stop in AlUla that needs no explaining, and the one worth arriving at late, for the light on the sandstone.
